If you have little ones at home, we all know that you cannot have anything cute sitting out on your coffee table, unless you don't mind it being destroyed! My coffee table has been empty for about 4 years now! I wanted to display something on my coffee table that I was able to put away quickly when my 18 month old was playing in the living room.
I had an older white wood tray in storage that I found and wanted to give it a makeover! You can find wood trays like this at most craft stores. You can paint it any color you choose. I left mine white...it already had the worn Shabby Chic look I wanted.
- wood tray
- scrapbook paper (I used a 12x12 size piece)
- Mod Podge
- sponge brush
- paper cutter
- hot glue gun
- jute string
(my little one got a hold of my jute..as you can tell!)
I began by measuring the scrapbook paper to cut it to the size of the tray. After you measure your paper put the paper to the side.
Using the sponge brush, brush the Mod Podge onto the bottom of the tray. Make sure to cover it with an even coat.
Place the scrapbook paper onto the bottom of the tray. Press down on the paper and rub out any bubbles. Let the paper dry for about 5 minutes. (My mistake was immediately covering the top of the paper with a coat of Mod Podge before letting it dry. My tray had a bunch of bubbles under the paper. I set a large book on top of it overnight to remove them!)
Cover the top of the paper with another coat of Mod Podge. Make sure to cover with an even coat. Let it dry for another 5 minutes.
Wrap jute around each handle. Make sure the Mod Podge is dry before wrapping the handles with Jute...you will get little fuzz pieces stuck to the tray! I used a dot of hot glue to hold the beginning of the jute in place. I then wrapped the entire handle and used more hot glue at the end to hold it together.
You can also use fabric or wallpaper to cover the bottom of your tray. Use your tray to display books, a candle, a snack, or hold your TV remotes. It is a simple way to add texture and color to your room....and I can easily pick it up and hide it away from my kids!
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.
